The following Architecture Principles are general rules and guidelines that can be used to govern an architecture process. They are designed to enable architects and those involved in the generation of systems, applications and services to act without constant monitoring, evaluating, correcting and controlling.

Architecture principles inform and support the way in which an organisation sets about fulfilling needs associated with creating IT solutions.

The definitions of architecture principles should be driven by business strategy and objectives, principles serve to both coordinate and restrict and limit how the architecture of IT solutions are designed for the benefit of the organisation’s wider objectives, while ensuring requirements are still met.

There will be circumstances where a trade-off needs to be made between strict adherence with the principles and other considerations such as time and cost for delivery. Principles should be used as guides for individual decision making by architects and business leadership, such as ‘product owners’.
